Over the last few years we’ve been thinking a bit more about what we spend our money on. Buying less, buying fairtrade, avioding buying from unetchical companies, buying eco, buying handmade, buying recycled.
We, of course, buy new and the occasional hideously unethical purchase, (as well as a few nice ones) as of course we are human! But we try to be a bit more active in actually having a thought about it all.
We sort of live in a time and place where people think you can and should have it all. And really simply, It just can’t be true. And the more we think it’s okay to have the lastest and greatest the worse we are making it for someone else.
On the whole buying less buying green, handmade, local, op-shopped, fairtrade etc – is great for our household budget, good for other people, means we have less crap in the house and usually items are better quality than their crappy plastic counterparts.
I saw this today and love it.I think I’ll pop it on the sidebar and hopefully it will remind me to buy well or buycott!

Hear hear! Just got me some op shop jeans today- I swear that whenever I need some new jeans, there are some good ones in my size just waiting for me at the op shop. Jag jeans they were, perfect. My no new clothes pledge is coming along just swimmingly, but I guess it’s only because other people buy too much, then chuck it when they get sick of it all.
It’s so true. Fabulous op-shops. You’ll zoom through the year!
i love this post and what your family is consciously choosing to do. good on you. it takes effort and time to do this, but the like you highlighted, there are so many positive trade-offs.
we (my partner and I) went to see premier of the doc… ‘the economics of happiness’ last week and we too are on a similar train of thought/path as you guys.
thanks for sharing
I’d love to see that. I heard them talking about it on the radio. Sounds interesting/inspiring.
